1. As a job; to stand Guard. Frequently guards will be placed at court guarding the Royal Presence, guards may also stand over the Royalty Room or a display of expensive items.

Special cases include the Queen's Guard and King's Guard.

2. An action/standard ready position in martial arts. On guard.
