Pelican in its piety

A common depiction in Medieval art symbolizing self sacrifice. The Pelican, it was believed by Medieval scholars, would peck at her own breast to feed her young on her blood in times of famine. When worn by an individual, it indicates membership in the Order of the Pelican.
