To make an honorable greeting to another by any means, but particularly prior to armoured or rapier combat by bringing the sword upright before the face and perhaps bowing or nodding to one's opponent. The so-called shield slap, in which the shield is struck with one's own sword, is in the nature of a challenge rather than a salute.
