Hat

1. Slang term for a Helmet, Crown or Coronet.

2. Slang term used to refer to someone who normally wears a crown of some sort, i.e., an "important person." (See sumptuary law and Awards for the rules on who wears crowns.) When used to denote a person it frequently becomes "Brass Hat" referring to the fact many coronets worn in the society are made of brass. The term is not derogatory in most usage, though it can be interpreted to be.
