Cristen was born on the Isle of Mann in the year 1520. As a young man he felt a sense of adventure and left the island joining the English royal navy.

Finding life in the navy to not agree with him, Cristen made his way to the continent in 1543. Finding his way to Spain, he eventually joined one of the many tercios. This allowed him to study the Spanish form of swordsmanship. Finding army life more agreeable than the navy, Cristen served for several years, until he was wounded in battle.

After recovering from his wound. Cristen asked permission to be apprenticed to one of the army surgeons. Feeling he could be of service to his fellow soldiers. This would turn into a profession he would keep the rest of his days.
