When she was old enough, he packed her off to Whitby Abbey, to study [[scribe|scribal arts]] amongst the nuns there. It was also a period of strife in Northern Ireland, and her father felt that she would be safer at the Abbey. At the age of sixteen, she returned to the Castle where she met a wandering Scot, Randle (Ian Gartloch), who was employed as a castle guard.
