Kallinikos Gavras is an <i>Akrites</i>, a border lord during the Macedonian dynasty in the Byzantine Empire. He's a minor cousin of the Gavras family, a noble family out of the city of Trebizond on the Black Sea Coast. He serves in the retinue of the <i>strategos</i> of the <i>Armeniakon</i> theme. In his free time he enjoys epic literature, astrology and divination, and discreet over-the-border trade with the neighboring Arabs.<br />
