One of the [[Chivalric Virtues]].  Skill at arms, especially of an [[armored combatant]].  Prowess, along with the other virtues, is perhaps the principal goal of [[armored combat]].  

The Old French term "œpreaux" may be used to refer to the prowess of a combatant, but has an additional implication of nobility and chivalry.  One wishes to be a "œpreaux chevalier" even if not a belted [[knight]].

In simple terms, Prowess is skill and the striving for skill, and in this sense it can apply to more than just combat.
