Short pants (usually linen) worn by men underneath their [[garb]]. There is no direct documentation that women ever wore braes, though many ladies in the [[SCA]] do choose to wear them for comfort. Though braes are roughly analogous to modern boxer shorts, there was no taboo against them showing in public, though in later period there was a Papal decree that the groin be covered by a triangle of fabric called a [[codpiece].  Though by such time braes and similar garments had given way to hose or other, more snugly fitted coverings of the nether regions and legs.  


Braes often had [[point]]s (holes) on the side at the hip through which [[chapes]] could be laced to hold up [[chausses]].
